Structuring with SGML and XML |
![]() |
Structuring with SGML (or XML) adds structural and content information to the text of the document.
|
||
| SGML and XML files are very small, because they only contain text and a relatively small proportion of SGML information in ASCII format. They are therefore ideal for use in databases, as is done in the Rohde & Schwarz editorial system. | |||
| SGML documents can also serve as the basis for printed handbooks. FrameMaker from Adobe, for instance, can read SGML (and XML) files, and can format them using complex sets of rules. | |||
| The high information content of SGML documents permits the data to be converted into almost any other format by means of appropriate software. | |||
| A variety of target formats can be created from the same SGML documents: printer output, online use, CD-ROM and so forth. Such multiple usage of a single data source is referred to as "single-source publishing". | |||
| For online intranet/internet use, "on-the-fly" conversion to web-compatible HTML is possible. | |||
